It’s a modern masterpiece that spans three worlds in four books, and tells the connected stories of Duncan Thaw – a student at Glasgow’s Art School in the s – and Lanark – a man who wakes to find himself in an unspecified period in the strange yet famili re-visit comes via R4 http: Gray shows an interest in sex which borders on the unhealthy, as indicated by the title of his novel Something Leathera novel that he compared to Chaucer.

Gray’s work always contains a satirical element. And then two years ago I moved away from that small town to Glasgow. The first thing you notice when you open it up and check out the Contents page is that it is structured in a weird way. Indeed what did I think? I adore this book. This ends book one and takes the reader to Thaw’s story, thereby suggesting that Thaw and Lanark are perhaps the same person. Special thanks to Montambo and Paul, otherwise I would have never heard of this, a true modern piece of literature that I believe captures the late 20th century.

This novel is a mix of dystopia with fantasy elements and bildungsroman. His other abiding interest is Scottish identity. Every bit as strange and wonderful as I was hoping.

I had fleetingly encountered so-called “magic realism” in translated Spanish, swallowed whole some oddball 19th-century Russians, a few American books that contained depictions of very “ordinary” lives told with grandeur and depth, but nothing of the kind about, well, home. Near perfect for the most part, with just the lanagk few fatal flaws. This section of Lanark is very much autobiographical, mirroring numerous events in Gray’s life such as his evacuation during the war to Perthshire, the occasion of a dance at the Glasgow School of Art, and Gray’s continuing health alasdakr with asthma and eczema.

The heat actually left the area and this allowed the delegate theme at the end to be absorbed without enkindling any serial rage. I was amused, angry too, but smiling.

He became a student, tried to work as a painter and became very ill. I don’t think one reading will do it justice. The eye unlike Wyndham Lewis’ in The Human Ageinstead of being lsnark, is more simply chafed; there’s a sharp edge here, but it glints only once in a long while. True, Thaw’s efforts to paint his city imaginatively lead to possible suicide and Lanark, charged with the task of imagining the city into words of such force they will save the place from total destruction, cocks up the whole show following a night of booze and easy sex.
