He kept insisting, truthfully, that he was a grad student who had come veenkatesh do research. First introduced in “Freakonomics,” here is the full story of Sudhir Venkatesh, the sociology grad student who infiltrated one of Chicago’s most notorious gangs The story of the young sociologist who studied a Chicago crack-dealing gang from the inside captured the world’s attention when it was first described in “Freakonomics.

It did not disappoint.

When he had completed his research he left all of his friends behind – clearly not understanding the bigger picture.

At home with the Black Kings

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book, since I tried one of the author’s earlier books, and liked the concept, but felt that it was a little too academic. Three and a half stars for an interesting book that I liked, upgraded to a 4. You heard of people leaving you for others?

And how does Robert Taylor compare to other housing projects in Chicago and elsewhere? He goes into the Robert Taylor homes allowing people to believe that he is there to help them.

But if we ever hope to come closer to solving it, understanding how it works and this book does a great job of explaining is probably pretty important. Venkatesh writes that ‘in front of me here was a movie oeader to life’ – and without doubt that is what his memoir gwng become.

Researcher Studies Gangs by Leading One

He told me it was quite a way and not to get off at the stop the driver sudhie me but the next one as it was closer. Venkatesh’s moxy or naivete certainly sets out for a sensational premise, in every sense of the word. Over Easter weekend that year, the estate had recorded firearms incidents and seen the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ shooting of two young lovers from blocks controlled by rival gangs, the Cobras and Disciples.

If major media outlets didn’t notice the note at the end of the book indicating the name changes, chances are that many other readers will miss the note as well. As the gang leader he befriended and then subsequently abandonned in his hustling for information succinctly and accurately described, ‘What else are you going to do? The author mentions former residents who now reside in nearby working-class neighborhoods, without providing a context for their movement out of the ghetto.

But I had several problems with the book that kept me from enjoying it as a much as I wanted to. In this book he takes sociology to a whole new level by becoming a part of the community he was studying.

What other choices do you have when housing authorities don’t have the means to help everyone who needs it? But they are genuine and they all have stories that often go untold.

Guys I finished it. As much as b Well, this was a fast paced read.
